Alabama
is home to one of the largest space museums in the country.
The Alabama Space and Rocket Center is located in Huntsville. At the
center, you can view the Space Shuttle and a Saturn V. Moon Rocket.
There are more than sixty interactive exhibits and a film about space
flight in the famous Space Dome. The
latest attraction is "Journey to Jupiter", which is a motion simulator
that allows 30 visitors at a time to immerse themselves into the wonders of
travel to the faraway planet. If you drive across this state be sure to take the time to check out the covered bridges. All in all, Alabama boasts 12 bridges. Most of them are located north and east of Birmingham. The most impressive bridge stands 70 feet high and runs 220 feet long. It is covering the Black Warrior River. Others include the Alamuchee Bridge, Kkymulga Bridge, Oakachoy Bridge, and Waldo Bridge. If you have a taste for fabulous southern food then Alabama is the place to bring your appetite! The traditional "down-home" cooking is absolutely fabulous. Try sampling foods like biscuits and gravy, barbecue (pork - not beef), and Creole cuisine. The seafood can also be especially good along the coast. Alabama’s shrimp festival is held in the fall and a must for shrimp fans!
If lounging on the beach is more your style, there are many available to choose from. For the golf enthusiast there are 7 new courses designed by Robert Trent Jones. Called the biggest golf construction project ever (topping out at a whopping $100 million), these courses are located within 15 miles of the state’s interstate highway system and are within a two-hour drive from each other. In the northern part of the state there are mountainous courses and in the south are wetland/water courses. Mobile
is Alabama’s only seaport city and is located on the west side of Mobile Bay.
Some of the sites to see are the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park,
which houses the mighty gunship, the submarine U.S.S. Drum, several airplanes
and a nature observatory. Also note
the enormous mansions and plantations that are available for touring.
Some of the more popular include the Oak Leigh House and the
Bragg-Mitchell Mansion.
