Travelers
who enjoy the simple pleasures of life in a slowly paced atmosphere will love
Arkansas. Historic sites, hills and
mountains, boating, hunting, festivals, Eureka Springs, mineral baths, and the
Ozarks are Arkansas’ main attractions. If
you make the trip to see the Ozark National Forest, you will actually be seeing
two forest and mountain ranges; the Ozarks and the Ouachitas.
These ranges offer some of the best scenery in middle America.
If you are going to make the trip via automobile, traveling along state
road 7 offers the best view of the landscape.
The Ozark Highland Trail is great for hiking as it extends for 165 miles. Centrally
located in the state you will find the capital city of Little Rock.
It was named after the “little rock” that served as the marker at a
bend in the Arkansas River. One of the more familiar sights is the restored 1836
Greek revival home, Old State House Museum.
This is where Clinton’s supporters celebrated his election and where
his victory speech was made. Also
check out the Museum of Science and History, the historic Quapaw Quarter, and
the Arkansas Territorial Restoration (an
outdoor museum). Little Rock was
nicknamed the "City of Roses"
because of its numerous rose gardens scattered throughout
the city. Herber
Springs is one of the state’s major recreational centers.
The trout fishing is great on the Little Red River.
The best catches seem to be where the river nears the Greers Ferry Dam.
A good area for golf, tennis, and hiking is Greers Ferry Lake, which has
Sugar Loaf Mountain rising from its center.
