Car Rental Options |
|
Here are some additional options available to
renters. *Options may vary between car rental companies.
Child
safety seat/Infant seat
Safety-approved. Child safety seats require an advance reservation.
Although infant seats can be requested at the counter, it is preferred
if they are requested at the time of booking. Prices will vary.
Ski
racks
Ski racks available in select locations only with advanced notice.
Refueling
your vehicle:
Most rental cars will have a full tank of fuel at the time of rental.
The basic rental rate does not include the cost for this fuel. There are
two fuel options:
Pre-paid
Gasoline:
The renter can pay for the full
tank of fuel at the time of rental. Prices per gallon will be near
local service pump prices, plus tax. This is the most convenient
fueling option-although there is no refund for unused fuel, it's a real
time-saver for people who are:
- Rushing to meet a flight
- Driving during inclement weather
- Driving in an unfamiliar area
- Driving where local gas stations are inconvenient
Return Full or Pay:
The renter can pay the car rental company at the end of the rental for fuel used but not replaced.
Price per
gallon will be substantially higher than local full-service pump prices,
plus tax. Worthwhile for:
- Those who plan to drive only a short distance and use only a few
gallons of gas
- Those who put a premium on convenience
- Business travelers who can benefit from having all their expenses
(rental car and gas) on one receipt

Rental
car companies and their customers sometimes don't do as they've
promised. Travelers occasionally no-show for their
reservations; cars occasionally no-show on the rental lot.
When you reserve a car, you commit yourself to letting the rental
company know if you decide not to use it, and you can be assessed a
financial penalty if you don't. On the other hand, it pays to know
what your options are in case a rental company is short of cars when
you come to claim yours.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The add-on charges you'll encounter when renting a car vary
widely in type, number, and cost, depending on location. Some add-ons
are taxes, based on a percentage of rental price; others are fees,
tacked on at a per-day or per-rental rate. Some are imposed by
states, on top of their usual sales taxes; some by counties,
cities, or special taxing districts; and some by airports. Often two,
three, four, or even five different taxes and fees will apply to each
rental. Except for airport-imposed taxes, the add-ons generally apply
no matter where you rent a car.
Really stiff airport taxes are a fairly new development. They've risen
to 10 percent or more in quite a few major U.S. cities, as well as at
several airports in Europe.

Liability
insurance protects you against claims for loss—personal injury
or property damage—that you might inflict on others when you drive a
rented car. You can't afford to drive any car without it; your risk
can be many times the value of the car.
Base rental rates used to include good liability coverage, but now
they include only the minimum required by state law—in some states,
none at all. Collision insurance covers damage to or theft of
the car you've rented. If you aren't insured, you could be on the hook
for the full value of the car if something happened.
The
basic facts you need to know about rental-car insurance come down to
four points:
- You
absolutely must be covered for liability and in some countries collision when you
drive a rented car.
- Some
combination of your regular auto insurance and your credit card
probably provides both protections.
- You
don't need any other special rental-car insurance.
- Any
insurance you may buy from a rental-car company is substantially
overpriced, compared with other sources.
