Connecticut

A good way to begin your vacation is by taking in the capitol city's historic sights.  While staying in Hartford, visit the state capitol building (which has a magnificent gilded dome high atop the building) and the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens.  The flowers in this beautiful park will reach their peak bloom in late June.  Other places of interest include the Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the country, and the Hartford Stage Company, which is known for its emphasis on classic and new American plays.    also take a drive on the Victorian Trail, which is a recently inaugurated tour similar to Boston's Freedom Trail.  It includes over two dozen stops in the beautiful countryside. If art history is more your style, visit the Wadsworth Atheneum, which is the oldest public art museum in the country!

A park that attracts thousands of tourists annually is the Dinosaur State Park.  This park has hundreds of actual dinosaur prints and tracks and is located on the southern outskirts of Hartford.  During the months of May through October, visitors can make their own print of a dinosaur track using plaster of Paris.  Be sure to check out the cascading falls at Southford Falls, which is located in Oxford, and the Kent Falls, located in the city of Kent.

Hartford is Connecticut’s capital city and is  located in the north-central region of the state.  Although this city was originally a Dutch trading post, it is now an industrial and financial center.  It is also where you find the homes of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain.  In fact, Mark Twain’s home looks like something out of a storybook itself! Another fascinating landmark is Gillette Castle, which runs along the Connecticut River and is located in Hadlyme.   The focus of this park is a fieldstone castle built by the legendary stage actor William Gillette (who was made famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes).  Behind the granite walls are secret passageways, doors operated by hidden springs, and other touches of mystery.  Connecticut - the "Nutmeg State" - also has a long coastline bordering Long Island Sound;  its terrain grows increasingly hilly as you travel north.  The Berkshires, an upland area lies just to the northwest.  It’s said that much of what is best about New England is located in the great outdoors.  Burr Pond in Torrington is the location of Borden’s Dairies first condensed-milk factory.  However, Burr Pond is probably best known for the tranquil area that encompasses the  pond itself.

Take a cruise around Thimble Islands, located just off the coast.  These islands were once the domain of the pirate Captain Kidd.

Depending on the season, you can pick anything from sweet corn and strawberries to tomatoes, peaches, peas, and pumpkins.

Connecticut is particularly famous for its Italian and Portuguese food.
