Cruising is quickly becoming the most popular vacation choice for families, adults, and seniors alike.  A cruise vacation is one of the most convenient ways to travel.  The price of your cruise includes the ship accommodations, ocean transportation, all meals, some beverages, and most entertainment aboard the vessel.  It also allows the opportunity to visit multiple destinations in a single vacation.

Some cruise companies cater to families.  Generally, there is a separate area of the ship specifically designed for your child or teenager.  There are a wide variety of age specific programs and activities available as well as planned activities and events.  This is a great way for parents to have some  relaxing time to themselves knowing their children are in the care of a supervised and attentive staff.  Also located on most ships are playgrounds, video and computer areas, special programs, and pool areas specifically designed for younger generations.  For the teens on board, cruise companies offer a variety of activity including New York-style coffee houses, lounge areas (usually featuring large screen televisions and computers), and programs featuring poetry, photography, and movie making.  Adults and seniors also have a number of specialties available to them, such as separate dining areas, health spas, jogging tracks and fitness areas, lounges, discos and casinos that offer hours of “big kid” entertainment.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports some dramatic changes in ship deployment this year. According to CLIA, the most popular destinations historically – including the Caribbean/Bahamas, the Mediterranean, Alaska and Europe – continue to dominate, but cruises in the Mediterranean, especially the eastern Mediterranean, have decreased. In addition, some less-traveled destinations are seeing a dramatic jump in cruise capacity this year, including Western Mexico, which tripled its number of cruise bed days, and trans-Pacific locations, whose bed days have doubled.

After 643 voyages, spanning 13 years, Holland America Line (HAL) bid farewell to the Westerdam yesterday. “The departure of a ship from our fleet is always a poignant occasion,” said Kirk Lanterman, HAL’s chairman and CEO. “The Westerdam is a wonderful cruise ship. She has provided more than a million guests with many happy memories and it is bittersweet to bid her farewell.” The Westerdam will be taken over by HAL’s sister company Costa Crociere.

Cruise lines have instituted new measures to help insure passenger safety. Some of the new measures include the following:  divers searching cruise ship hulls for explosives, dockworkers screening passengers for weapons, and the Coast Guard is escorting ships into ports. Cruise lines have also added security personnel aboard ships to help passengers feel safe.

Documentation

The United States Immigration determines that the following documents are required to be in the passenger's possession in order to travel.  All non-U.S. citizens must surrender their passports and/or green cards.  These documents will be returned at Immigration upon arrival into the United States.  Canadian and United States guests require proof of citizenship (passport, certified copy of birth certificate with a raised seal, or the original birth certificate will qualify), and government issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport) for most cruises.  Resident aliens need BOTH a passport and an alien resident card.

Make several copies of your passport, traveler's checks, credit cards, itinerary, airline tickets and other travel documents. Leave one copy with a relative or friend back home and carry one copy with you.

Take most of your money in traveler's checks and record the serial numbers, denominations and date and location of the issuing agency. Remove all unnecessary credit cards from your wallet. Be sure to carry your credit card company's telephone number in case your card is lost or stolen. Always report losses immediately.

Depending on your destination, additional items or documentation verifying proof of citizenship may be required.  For exact requirements please click here to contact a travel consultant.

Destinations

Possibly the biggest advantage of a cruise vacation is the opportunity to visit multiple destinations in one trip.  There is so much to see and do at each port of call.  Each destination has unique features and individual specialties.  Cruising can offer you a variety of choices as to which places you want to see.  Traveler’s Fare, Inc. handles all of the major cruise companies as well as the smaller one-day cruise lines.  From Alaska to Italy, there is a cruise line that is perfectly suited for you.
