Delaware,
a small state, contains several noteworthy attractions.
It features an array of museums such as the Delaware art museum (best
known for its extraordinary collections of pre-Raphaelites and American
illustrations), Delaware Museum of Natural History
(where you can see the wildlife of Mt. Kenya and walk across Australia’s
Great Barrier Reef), and the Brandywine River Museum.
Delaware is named after Sir Thomas West, otherwise known as "Lord de
la Warr". Dover, the state’s
capital since 1777, is home to the second oldest state house in the U.S. that is
in continuous use; the Delaware State House which was built in 1792.
Located on the outskirts of the city are three major points of interest:
the Delaware Agricultural Museum, the Dover Air Force Base, and the John
Dickinson Plantation.
Dewey Beach is surrounded by Rehoboth Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Sports fans can often be found at the Dover Downs. This racetrack features harness racing November through March and the Nascar Budweiser 200 and 500 stock car races. Just west of Dover in the Rose Valley area you will find a small, Amish farming community. The Winterthur Museum and Gardens are a unique collection of decorative arts that were made or used in America between 1650 and 1850. It houses a vast collection of paintings, ceramics, and furniture and is combined with a peaceful garden and arboretum containing thousands of species and varieties of plants, wildflowers, and exotic trees and shrubs. Located a short distance away is Nemours Mansion and Gardens. It is the estate of Alfred I. Dupont. This estate is surrounded by 300 acres of formal French gardens and houses a collection of Louis XVI-style antique furniture, rugs, tapestries, and paintings.
