If a big
wedding's not your bag, escape somewhere exotic for a private
ceremony or invite the whole gang along for an extended wedding, honeymoon, and
reunion. Eloping? Destination
weddings are economical and offer a literal world of options.
How about a Caribbean beach, Spanish castle, Italian countryside, New England
beach, or mountain in Tibet?
Ready to bag the mile-high wedding cake and
circulation-blocking garter belt and escape somewhere romantic for your wedding
day? It doesn't have to be just a fantasy! In fact, even if you want that cake
and garter, you can get married in a tropical paradise. All it takes is a little
extra planning, with the help of a Traveler's Fare, Inc. Travel Consultant.
Some couples try to plan a big wedding, only to realize
it's not their dream but their family's. Others have always dreamed of running
away and getting married somewhere unusual. It's secretive, fun, and
adventurous. Others can't afford big weddings or want to avoid all the headaches
involved in planning one.
Many couples with children from prior marriages also
love the idea of a destination wedding because it's a bonding vacation for the
new family. Or, it may be the perfect opportunity for a family reunion! In
fact, more and more couples are choosing to marry away - and tons of resorts are
answering the call for services. Just about anywhere you want to go (especially
in tropical places) you should be able to find people on-site or nearby whose
job it is to help you plan you wedding.
Plan Ahead --
Unless you're doing a drive-through in Vegas, start planning your wedding away
as soon as possible. Not only must the basic paperwork be completed and travel
reservations secured, some countries require that documents be translated,
public notices posted, and residency requirements fulfilled (ranging from
nonexistent to one month). Remember also that, as a foreigner, you'll likely
have more bureaucratic red tape to wrangle with and that marriage bureaus in
other countries are often not as expedient as those in the U.S. unless, of
course, you're getting married in a well-oiled tourist destination.
Think Thrifty --
If friends and family are invited along for the ride, go easy on their bank
accounts. Guests should pay all their own expenses with the exception of the
wedding party. Tradition says that the bride or her family should cover
lodging for the bridesmaids and the groom or his family should do the same for
the groomsmen. Otherwise, they pick up their own tab. It helps if you insist
they not buy you gifts, and ask one of our travel consultants about group
discounts on air and hotels.
Be Flexible --
Foreign countries work in mysterious ways. For example, in some locales, you can
marry Monday through Friday only or not after the sun sets. Some places do not
permit civil (non-religious) ceremonies. And unless you're packing your family
priest, be open-minded about who officiates your big day.
Arrive Early --
Fly in a few days before the main event to get the lay of the land and nail down
the final details: sample the hotel's food, scout sites, make hair and makeup
appointments. In far-flung locales, this will help you shake residual jet lag
also.

own. Created with the most discerning couples in mind,
Sandals St. Lucia Golf Resort & Spa rates among the most

reception started before the groom even gets to kiss the bride.

Many canny couples choose to marry in the same place that they honeymoon.
This can save a considerable amount of money and hassle. Some hotels in
the United States and the Caribbean will be happy to arrange your wedding.
Some even price it as part of a package. Some couples bring a few members
of the family or a small wedding party whose members might stay in the same
resort for just the weekend. For those getting married for a second time
who would like to bring their children, there are resorts which arrange the
wedding, then provide supervised day long activities for the children and
private areas where adults can enjoy beach and sports activities.
1. Check your options. Some hotels offer free weddings and have
unusual and memorable "once in a lifetime" places to marry.
2. Documentation. Make sure that you have all of the necessary
documentation. This can be done through consulates, tourist boards, on site
hotel wedding planners or by contacting Traveler's Fare, Inc.
3. Your travel agent! Tell our professional Travel Consultants
that you are planning to get married in the hotel, and get the name of the
person who will assist you on site.
4. Contacts. Let friends and family know your hotel phone and
fax.
5. The Wedding Party. Decide how many of your family and/or
friends are coming and book rooms well in advance.
6. Your Wedding Gown. Decide what you both want to wear. Most
women choose full bridal gowns or white cocktail dresses. Most men wear a tuxedo
or a jacket, tie and pants. Pack these in a separate suitcase.
7. Music. If soft background music is in your dreams, take a
favorite CD or tape and a player.
8. Make a "When You Are There" appointment. Make an
appointment with the hotel wedding consultant after arrival.
9. Choose a date! Most couples plan the ceremony for one or two
days after arrival.
10. Pick out your spot. Tour the property together on your own
and choose a few beautiful sites for the ceremony before the wedding
consultant takes you on a tour.
11. Choose a color theme. Have a few of your favorite colors in
mind. The theme can be carried out in your bouquet, your cake, decorations, etc.
12. Plan your wedding day! Will you get married in the morning or
at sunset? What will you do after the ceremony? Stay in your wedding
finery? Go to dinner with another honeymoon couple? Have a champagne
cocktail at the bar? Dine in the gourmet restaurant? (Be sure to reserve a
romantic table in advance.)
13. Plan your pictures.
Even
if the hotel arranges the wedding free of charge, you will have to pay the
photographer, probably in cash. If you are out of the USA and want black and
white as well as color photos, bring 35 MM black and white film. If you want a
video, tell the hotel wedding planner in advance. |
