Indiana

In historic Ft. Wayne, located in the northeastern part of Indiana, you’ll find attractions as diverse as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (containing woodcarvings and unusual stained-glass windows) to the burial site of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. Also make some time to see the Bass Mansion, a 33-room Romanesque castle with a stunning circular staircase, the Embassy Theatre, built in 1928 and used for live performances, and the Foelliger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory.  Another famous attraction is located about 40 miles south of Ft. Wayne; Amishville U.S.A. is a working Amish farm and the environment is an interesting experience.

If you want to climb the sand dunes at the Indiana Dunes State Park/National Lakeshore be sure to bring your sneakers as the sand is scorching hot.  A little farther down the road, you will find the state’s only lighthouse and the Old Lighthouse Museum located in Michigan City. Another famous national landmark is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.  The monument is located in the heart of Indianapolis and is a must see when visiting the area.

Attention race fans!  Thousands of people descend upon the city of Indianapolis for the running of the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend.  However, race activity is pretty much in full swing at least a month prior to the race day with qualifying trials and other related events.  When you do attend, make sure you catch some related race events such as Carburetion Day, the Mechanics Recognition Party, the 500 Festival Queens Ball, the 500 Festival Memorial Service (honoring veterans), and the 500 Festival Parade featuring colorful floats and race-car drivers.  After the race, pay homage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

Some of the parks and recreational areas are fabulous.  They include Mounds State Park (featuring Indian earthworks), St. Patrick’s County Park, Clifty Falls State Park (a rocky canyon containing beautiful waterfalls), and McCormick's Creek State Park (boasting unusual limestone formations).

Respect the privacy of the Amish when visiting their community.

Book reservations for the Indianapolis 500 weekend well in advance.

Don't expect to be able to gamble in Indiana - a law passed in 1993 prohibits it.
