Packing List - Women
|
| Note:
Although several items are listed singularly, you may, of course, need
to pack more than one of any given item, and you will also find that you
won't need many of the items. For any trip, give careful consideration
to where you are traveling, including (1) climate, (2) social customs
and (3) degree of formality of functions that you will attend. |
| SMART TIP #1: Avoid over packing by selecting
neutral mix-and-match items from your wardrobe -- black and khaki are
great choices -- in carefree knits, such as Lycra. (Who wants to iron
clothes on vacation?!) A couple of colorful scarves or a soft wrap, some
inexpensive jewelry and a versatile pair of comfortable shoes will dress
you up for nearly any occasion! |

| SMART TIP #2: Purchase a strong train case or
toiletry organizer, everything you can in travel size, and small
unbreakable containers for the rest of your items. If you're flying,
don't let the case out of your sight. (Bottles containing liquid can
burst in cargo . Besides, think of the trouble you'd be in if the
airline lost it!) Gauge how much stuff you actually use on a daily
basis, then keep the case filled with enough supplies for a two-week
trip. Next time, just grab it and go! |

| SMART TIP #3: If you're flying, aim to carry your
luggage on. Advantages: (1) you'll control where your luggage ends up;
and, (2) you'll be out of the airport while others are waiting for their
bags at the carousel! Most airlines allow each passenger two carry-on
bags (although purses aren't usually counted as luggage). However, size
matters, so call your airline for specific requirements. Generally, try
to pack everything into a rolling carry-on, an overnight case (with your
toiletry case packed inside), and a purse. Bonus carry-on: if you're
bringing a bulky coat or jacket, wear it getting on and off the plane! |

(*) items handy at all times (many of which will already be in
your purse), especially if you're crammed into a coach seat. You never
know when you'll want your sweater, need to take an aspirin or jot down
a note! With few exceptions, you'll be able to slip your purse under the
seat in front of you. You may even want to consider slipping your
overnight case there, too . |

Packing List - Men
|
| Note:
Although several items are listed singularly, you may, of course, need
to pack more than one of any given item, and you will also find that you
won't need many of the items. For any trip, give careful consideration
to where you are traveling, including (1) climate, (2) social customs
and (3) degree of formality of functions that you will attend. |
| SMART TIP #1: Don't leave home without a versatile,
lightweight sports jacket. Not only will it get you into a good
restaurant, it will protect you -- or your partner -- on a chilly
evening. Casual slacks are a must; and, as for footwear, try to limit
yourself to two pairs: one pair of comfortable shoes along with one
dressier pair. |

|
| SMART TIP #2: Generally, you have relatively few
items to pack in your toiletry kit, but you'll still find it beneficial
to pack what you can in travel size. Not only will you save room in your
luggage, but many hotels have less-than-adequate bathroom shelf space.
Never check your kit if you're flying, because items such as aftershave
can burst in cargo. (That aftershave may smell great on you, but let's
not overdo it!) Keep your toiletry kit filled with enough supplies for a
two-week trip, then just grab it and go the next time! |

Packing List - Children
|

won't need many of the items. For any trip, give careful consideration
to where you are traveling, including (1) climate, (2) social customs
and (3) degree of formality of functions that you will attend. |
| SMART TIP #1: Traveling can be stressful for
children -- especially the first time. Some of the stress can be greatly
alleviated by involving children in vacation plans and packing. For
example, shopping together for a special piece of luggage that a child
will call his or her own can change apprehension to excitement. Or,
allow a child to choose a new outfit to be set aside, then worn for the
first time while traveling. |

Toiletries and Personal Items
|
| SMART TIP #2: If your child is potty-trained, you
won't need much luggage space for toiletries -- especially if you
transfer items into unbreakable travel-size containers. In fact, most of
the items will fit nicely into a couple of zip-lock bags that can then
be packed directly in the child's suitcase. However, if you're traveling
with a baby or a toddler, you'll have considerably more items and bulk
in general -- think "diapers"! To save precious space,
consider bringing only a couple of days' worth of diapers, then
purchasing more at your destination (but be sure this is a convenient
option in advance). When flying, make sure all toiletries are in a
carry-on bag, since bottles containing liquid can burst in cargo. |

SMART TIP #3: If you're flying, aim to carry your child's
luggage on (along with all of yours, if possible!). That way, you'll be
in control of the luggage, and you'll save lots of time when you reach
your destination. Most airlines allow each passenger two carry-on bags,
so try packing children's items into a child-size rolling suitcase and a
small backpack (provided the child is old enough to carry it). Save
luggage space: if the child will require a bulky coat or jacket, have
him or her wear it getting on and off the plane!
Crucial: Always secure children and babies with identification
cards or bracelets, along with local accommodation information. Age
permitting, explain the importance of the identification (without
frightening the child), and what he or she should do in the event of an
unexpected separation from you -- including how to call "911".
Consider giving the child a small amount of emergency money, in addition
to his or her extra "vacation money".
