Mississippi

Located along the Mississippi gulf coast, the Gulfport-Biloxi area is the third largest gaming area in the country.  The more popular casinos are the Beau Rivage, Grand Casino Gulfport, and the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino.  This southern playground offers historic sites, twenty-six miles of sugar sand beaches, more than twenty golf courses, and famous southern hospitality.  Biloxi is growing rapidly as the premier resort port city along the Mississippi.  This city was also made famous for its beautiful 19th-century homes.

Mississippi has many things to offer visitors.  Shop for antiques at factory outlet stores or the smaller shops tucked away in the countryside.  Outdoorsmen and sports enthusiasts alike will find much to do with the numerous golf courses offering rolling fairways and beautiful views of the gulf.  Visit museums, tour a mansion, or take a ferry to one of the barrier islands.

The historic town of Pass Christian is located just west of Biloxi.  This small community has many lovely antebellum homes.  Fresh crab and shrimp are a specialty here.  If you are not one for ordering, go out and catch it yourself!  Charters are available and with more than 200 species of fish, you’re sure to have a good catch.

The state of Mississippi played a key role in the Civil War.  One of the  most famous cities, Vicksburg, is well known for the Vicksburg National Military Park, commemorating the battle.  Vicksburg was under siege for 47 days by Union troops lead by General Ulysses S. Grant.  You’ll find forts, trenches, artillery and artillery positions, and hundreds of plaques and monuments.  Vicksburg is also quickly crashing into the casino craze.  This city already has three riverboat casinos that are moored on the water and located in the downtown area.  Be sure to visit the Ruins of Windsor.  These pillars are all that is left of this magnificent structure.

The sunset over the gulf is breathtaking.  Be sure to make a point to see it - you won't regret it!

Check out the unique building called Margaret's Grocery; it's a bizarre conglomeration of signs, bricks, cement blocks, and other objects that have been mortared together to form walls.

When asking for directions to Midway make sure you are specific - there are two separate towns in Mississippi with that same name.
