New HampshireNew Hampshire State House

If you are looking for a fabulous concentration of historic attractions, visit Concord, which is the capital city of New Hampshire.  Begin with the State House, which was built in 1819.  It is a neoclassical structure featuring statues of Daniel Webster, Franklin Pierce, and other New Hampshire notables.  The building is constructed out of granite and topped off with a gold dome.  Then drop by the New Hampshire Historical Society Museum and Library to learn about the state’s history in exhibits, art, and furniture.  The Christa McAuliffe Planetarium, named after the elementary school teacher who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986, features interactive exhibits and lets visitors chart their course through space.  A final stop at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery can be the end of a perfect day.  Here you will learn about the brewing of beer and you can take a tour of the many historical exhibits on site.

Mt Washington (NH)

Clustered in the central region of the state you will find White Mountains National Forest.  Here you will encounter some of New England’s finest ski resorts.  The most challenging of the mountains is Mt. Washington.  This mountain is the tallest in the northeastern part of the United States and stands 6,288 feet tall.  It's  known for its changeable weather and record wind speeds, which have been known to reach gusts of over 230 m.p.h.  Mt. Washington is definitely not recommended for novice or beginning skiers.  If you are looking for something a little more laid back we suggest Waterville Valley.  It has 53 trails carved out of two adjacent mountains (Mt. Tecumseh and Snow Mountain) and more than half of the runs are geared for the beginner or intermediate skier. Other mountains to check out are Bretton Woods Ski Area, Cannon Mountain, and Wildcat Mountain.  If skiing isn’t your thing, check out the Indoor Sports Center.  This center offers a jogging track, a 25-meter pool, tennis, racquetball, squash courts, and weight rooms.  Visitors can also try snowboarding, take a sleigh ride, ice-skate, or go cross-country skiing.  There is something for everyone in New Hampshire.

When driving down Mt. Washington put your car in low gear - the hill is so steep it is not uncommon for people to burn the brakes out of their cars.

Check with the Park Ranger before venturing outside.  The weather can change suddenly and drastically.

"Uncle Sam" was born in the city of Mason.  More commonly known as Samuel Wilson, his home is still standing today.  His claim to fame was beef - he delivered beef to the army in 1812 under the brand "US" and became known as Uncle Sam ... the rest is history!
