New Jersey

New Jersey maintains and operates thirty-five state parks, eleven state forests, five recreation areas, and four state marinas.  Liberty State Park is the most popular of them all.  This parks serves as an ideal place for views and ferry rides to the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigrant Museum.  Another attraction is the newly constructed Liberty Science Center.  Boasting a price tag of $65 million dollars, this center focuses on the three themes of invention, environment, and health.  Check out a show at the Kodak Omni Theater (which houses the world’s largest Omnimax screens) located at the center of the Liberty Science Center.

Since gambling was legalized in Atlantic City in the late 1970’s, most visitors that come to this coastal city congregate around the blackjack tables and the slot machines.  The city whose streets inspired Boardwalk and Baltic of the classic board game Monopoly is a top tourist destination in the United States.  Annually, over thirty million visitors come to Atlantic City.  There is plenty of activity at the twelve waterfront casinos.  All the casinos are open 24 hours a day on the weekends and from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 a.m. on weekdays.  The hotel/casinos dotting Atlantic City Boardwalk include the following: Bally’s Grand Hotel Casino, Bally’s Park Place Casino Hotel and Tower, Caesars Atlantic City, Claridge Casino Hotel, Harrah’s Marina Hotel Casino, Merv Griffin’s Resorts Casino Hotel, The Sands Hotel Casino and Country Club, Showboat, TropWorld Casino, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, and the Trump Taj Majal Casino Resort.   These casino/hotels have a wide variety of dining choices – as many as 12 different restaurants in a single hotel.  Menus offer everything from burgers to bouillabaisse.

Lucy The Margate ElephantOther attractions along the Boardwalk include Lucy the Margate Elephant, a huge hollow mammal built in 1881 and constructed completely out of wood and tin, and the Convention Hall, which is home to the Miss America Pageant held every September.  Also check out Tivoli Pier, an indoor amusement park, and Ocean One, a shopping complex shaped like an ocean liner extending 900 feet into the sea.  If you are looking for eats along the Boardwalk you will find hot dogs, pizza by the slice, and shaved ice.

Six Flags Great Adventure, which is located in the city of Jackson, differs from other Six Flags Theme Parks.  It is situated in a 1,700-acre woodland and has a 350-acre hectare drive-through safari that features more than 2,000 animals.  Six Flags also offers more than 100 rides as well as water shows, flumes, and entertainment geared towards families.

Newark was founded in 1666.  What began as a simple agrarian community has now grown into a major commercial center.  If you are visiting this city some points of interest include the recently renovated Newark Museum (which showcases Tibetan and Oriental works, a planetarium, and a sculpture garden), The Essex County Courthouse (it has a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the courtyard and was designed by Gutzmon Borglum, who’s other works include Mt. Rushmore), and the Sacred Heart Cathedral.  Take in a play at the Paper Mill Playhouse, the main venue for dramatic plays and Broadway musicals. New Jersey is the birthplace of Frank Sinatra (Hoboken), Jack Nicholson (Neptune), and Bruce Springsteen (Freehold).

During the summer months most of the beach communities will charge a fee for beach use - usually between $2.00 and $5.00 per day.

Try stomping grapes at the Renault Winery.

If you win big in Atlantic City, tip your dealer.  They depend on tips for the bulk of their salary.
