Theodore Roosevelt National Park, gambling, camping, fishing, Devils Lake, the International Peace Garden, game and bird hunting are some major attractions that North Dakota offers to visitors.  North Dakota offers an abundance of parks and recreation areas.  One park that you must see is the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, which is located in Stanton.  Here you can tour ruins of prehistoric Native American villages, go hiking on one of the many trails, have a picnic, or go fishing.  On the Badlands Prairie of the Little Missouri National Grasslands, you can see bighorn sheep, elk, antelopes, white-tailed and mule deer, prairie dogs, grouse, eagles, and falcons.  You will also find White Fringed Orchids growing in great abundance during the spring and summer months.  To see a wide variety of wildflowers, visit the Head of the Mountain Nature Preserve.

Bismarck is the state’s capital city.  Places of interest include the North Dakota Heritage Center, which is a combination of a museum, state archives, and an art gallery, the Railroad Museum and the Lewis and Clark Riverboat.  This trip heads down the Missouri River and is a convenient way to reach the Ft. Abraham Lincoln State Park.  Here you will find the site of the cavalry post George Custer used to set out with his army for Little Big Horn.  Travelers looking for a quiet area to fish, hunt, or learn about the history of the United States will enjoy their visit to North Dakota.  

Theodore Roosevelt went to North Dakota to hunt.  He fell in love with the state and ended up buying two ranches.  The Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located in Medora, includes part of his Elkhorn Ranch, which is now a tribute to the great president.  It has a strange landscape that is composed of blue, yellow, red, brown, and gray strata.  If you travel to the South Unit, you can see the Maltese Cross Cabin where Roosevelt lived for a brief time.  The facilities available at these two areas include camping, picnicking, horse trails, hiking, canoeing, fishing, trails for four-wheel-drive vehicles, and snowmobile trails.

 

The historic Fargo theater  in downtownNorth Dakota’s largest and most metropolitan city is Fargo.   This city is filled with beautiful architecture, which includes Victorian, Modern, and Romanesque style homes.  Also pay a visit to the Fargo Theater.  It was constructed in 1930 and has graceful curved lines and neon lighting.  There is a tribute to Roger Maris located in a small museum at the West Acres Shopping Center.  This city also boasts many casinos (some are located in the larger hotels) and the 22,000 seat Fargo Dome.  It  attracts such big names as Garth Brooks and the World Wrestling Federation.

 

Definitely see some buffalo - but don't get too close!

Driving can be treacherous during the winter so be cautious.
