The capital city of
Columbus is host to the nation’s biggest celebration of Christopher
Columbus’ arrival 500 years ago. A
full-size replica of Columbus’ three-masted flagship, the Santa Maria is
moored downtown on the Scioto River. Franklin
Park Conservatory contains tropical gardens and the new “World Under Glass”
exhibits showing seven of the earth’s ecosystems.
Among the city’s newest attractions is the Columbus Zoo’s Discovery
Reef, a 100,000-gallon tank containing artificial coral and over 1,000 animals.
Other places of
interest include the Ohio Historical Center, the Columbus Museum of Art, and the
Ohio State Fair.
The summer resort area of Sandusky is home to one of the two theme parks in the
state of Ohio. Cedar Point has
added several new rides (like the Flume Plunge), live entertainment, and a
children’s ride area. Younger
children will love Berenstain Bear Country and young and old alike will love the
thrill of the roller coasters. The
block-buster film “Tommy Boy” was set in the town of Sandusky.
The Lake Erie Islands
attract thousands of anglers each year. This
group of five islands – the Kelleys, Catawba, North Bass, Middle Bass, and
South Bass – also offer hiking, boating, and swimming during the summer months
and dog-sled racing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing during the winter
months.
In
honor of such baseball greats as Cy Young, Pete Rose, and Satchel Paige, the
Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame was constructed in the nearby city of Maumee.
Plan a day to visit the “Glass Capital of the World” – Toledo.
Here you can see the history of glass and lots of glass items, along with
other fine art from around the world showcased in the Toledo Art Museum and at
the University Arts Center. Another
must see is the Toledo Zoo. You
have to see the hippos swimming in the world’s first Hippoquarium.
The Willis B. Boyer is a ship museum that is berthed at International
Park. It provides an interesting
look at life aboard a lake freighter in the early 1900’s.

The Flats and The
Warehouse District are the city's hot spots for clubs and restaurants.
