Utah

This rugged state, one of the nation’s most popular recreation spots, is filled with forests, hills, mountains, deserts, valleys, lakes, and farmland.  Utah, which was once considered a radical state, is now perceived as one of the most socially and politically conservative states in the country.  The capital of Utah, Salt Lake City, is the heart of the Mormon religion.  It is a point of extreme interest for those who follow the faith.   Tours are available through the famous Mormon Tabernacle and the Genealogical Library.  What is there to do in Utah?  Plenty!  Visit the Arches National Park, which is thought to be the world’s largest concentration of natural stone arches with numbers reaching 1,500.  If this interests you, be sure to see Landscape Arch (located in Devil’s Garden) and the Delicate Arch.  Capitol Reef National Park is an incredible sight because of the white sandstone domes that sit above the richly colored cliffs.

Superb ski resorts include Snowbird, Park City, and Deer Valley.  Beginning skiers shouldn’t be put off by the height of the peaks as there are plenty of gentle, groomed slopes.  However, those of you looking for a challenge, Utah has a couple!  Deer Valley is a new, somewhat exclusive, resort.  Lift ticket sales are limited which allows for comfortable crowd conditions on the slopes.  Park City offers five open bowls, 13 lifts (including one high-speed gondola), moguled runs, and night skiing on the longest, lighted run in the Rockies.  Snowbird ski resort is known for its challenging rough terrain.  At least fifty percent of the runs are for experts only.  Snowbird offers 2,000 acres of skiable terrain and contains two north-facing bowls.  Lodging is available from budget to deluxe properties.  Many have fantastic views of the valley.  Check out one of the newer properties downtown or  one of the city’s elegant, renovated older hotels.

Bring lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Stay on the trails.  You can destroy the protective crust that prevents soil from blowing away.  This could take decades to repair.

Purchase a Golden Eagle Pass if you plan to visit several national parks and monuments.

Wear sunblock in both the summer and winter months.
