Vermont

Like much of New England, Vermont (French for “green mountain”) consists of beautiful mountains, lakes, rolling hills, forests, and farmland.  The state of Vermont is well-known for its covered bridges. Vermont’s largest city, Burlington, has many  historic sights to visit, beginning with the Ethan Allen Home.  This restored farmhouse is where the Revolutionary War hero lived and  the site of the Ethan Allen Burial Place.  It is actually located on the site of a British naval attack.  Lake Champlain is supposed to have its own monster, “Champ”, who is the cousin of Scotland’s “Nessie”.  Here you will also find the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, the Lake Champlain Islands (Grand Isle, Isle La Motte, and North Hero), and an unusual 16-sided church constructed in 1813.

New England’s best and most extensive resort region is the Killington Ski Area.  Six different peaks connected by nine chairlifts, and space-age gondolas makes this region a preferred ski destination.  Of the 107 skiable trails, thirty-eight are expert runs.  The Outer Limits run is a challenge for even the most experienced hotdoggers but the run is often icy.  Families may want to participate in the Killington Ski School.  Other popular Vermont areas include Bromley Mountain, Magic Mountain Ski Area, Mount Snow, and Stratton Mountain.

Mid-September is the most spectacular time of year to visit Vermont with the beautiful changing of color in the trees and shrubs.  The chairlifts at most of the state’s ski areas offer exceptional views of this fiery-looking forest.  Montpelier is the nation’s smallest capital city with a population of less than 10,000.  The Montpelier Historic District includes some of the most well preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture.  Places of interest include the Capitol Building, (constructed of locally quarried granite), the Vermont Historical Museum, and Morse Farm (where you can watch maple sugaring).

Take a ride on the Green Mountain Railway.

Rudyard Kipling lived in Dummerston for forty years.  He wrote the Jungle Book and Captains Courageous.

Ride the chairlifts in order to get a birds eye view of the spectacular fall foliage.
