Wisconsin

Milwaukee is a modern city with a bustling downtown business district and a lovely lakefront.  One of your first stops when visiting this city should be at the Milwaukee Public Museum, which is one of the 10 largest history museums in the United States and was founded in 1882.  Also be sure to check out the Discovery World Museum, Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, and the Performing Arts Center.  Before you leave the city, you may want to tour a brewery - after all, its beer that made Milwaukee famous.  Miller, Pabst, and Sprecher's ( a microbrewery) all offer tours.  The Miller tour offers a visit to the Brewer's Caves Museum.  Milwaukee's first brewers dug caverns into the bluffs to serve as natural coolers.  Also be sure to attend Summerfest and Winterfest, both 11 day festivals.

Wisconsin offers a wide variety of shopping with excellent buys in the areas of arts, crafts, and antiques.  Wisconsin is best known for cheese and beer.  In the central part of Wisconsin, Oshkosh is a shopper's paradise.  The town has over 60 factory-outlet stores, including the Genuine Article factory store (where OshKosh B'Gosh clothing is sold).  Crafts enthusiasts will want to make a pilgrimage to Mineral Point, a town founded by Cornish immigrants that has become a lovely tribute to handmade art and 19th century eclectic tastes.

Those travelers who are interested in a relaxing vacation with outdoor activities, inspiring natural beauty, and friendly people will have a great time in Wisconsin.  The  state's capital, Madison, is located in the south-central part of the state.  While visiting the capital, take in the Farmer's Market on Capitol Square, the State Historical Society Museum, and the Wisconsin Folk Museum.  One of the most popular Wisconsin attractions is the skeleton of a mastodon that roamed Wisconsin during the Great Ice Age which is housed in the Geology Museum.

Families will love the Vilas Park Zoo.  On Sunday mornings, kids can ride a camel for free!  So much of Wisconsin's appeal comes from the great outdoors, especially its many parks and preserves.  A partial list includes Pattison, Bit Manitou Falls, Black River Gorge, Copper Falls, and Devil's Lake.  The Northern Unit Kettle Moraine State Forest is a glacier-carved landscape with lots of lakes.  In addition to the cross-country skiing throughout the state, there are several downhill slopes that provide a fantastic weekend getaway.  Whitecap Mountain is among the dozen or so in the north near the Michigan Border.  It is part of "Big Snow Country".

Towering sandstone cliffs along the Wisconsin River attract visitors to Wisconsin Dells.  This area is extremely popular for families with children.  Here you'll find attractions like the Tommy Bartlett Ski, Sky, and Stage Show, Tommy Bartlett's Robot World and Exploratory, Noah's Ark, FamilyLand and Riverview Water Parks.  For adults, the Wisconsin Dells area boasts a greyhound track and a motor speedway.

Lake Geneva, in the southeast part of Wisconsin, is a 5,000-acre lake that's a perfect place for water sports.  Among the possibilities is a cruise on one of the boats of the Geneva Lake Cruise Line, which offers scheduled excursions and specialty cruises from mid-June to mid-September.
